The United States Army is gearing up for a monumental celebration, and you’re invited to be part of history. This June, Philadelphia will host the Army 250th anniversary event, marking two and a half centuries of service, sacrifice, and dedication to our nation. As a veteran and your host of the Decision Hour, I had the privilege of speaking with Tom Long, a key organizer of this once-in-a-lifetime event. Let me share why this celebration is not just about the past, but a powerful testament to our present and future.
The Heart of American History
Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation, will once again take center stage. On June 14th and 15th, 2024, the city will transform into a living museum of military heritage and American pride. This isn’t just another anniversary – it’s the kickoff to America’s 250th birthday celebration.
Tom Long, a veteran himself, painted a vivid picture of what attendees can expect:
“We’ll start at 11 o’clock in the morning on the 14th. We have a naturalization ceremony, flag raising, 250 soldiers being enlisted, the army’s actual birthday celebration… Throughout the day, we’ll have jump-ins, fast roping, and all kinds of different demonstrations.”
But it’s not just about the spectacle. This event is a unique opportunity to connect with the very essence of what it means to serve and to be an American.
A Journey Through Time
One of the most captivating aspects of the celebration will be the historical reenactment on June 15th. Imagine witnessing George Washington, astride his white horse, riding up to Independence Hall to receive his commission as Commander of the Continental Army – 250 years to the day after the original event.
Tom described it with palpable excitement:
“He’ll come out and have people in era-time war uniforms from 1775 to 2025. He’ll do a passing review on his way over to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington Square where we’ll lay wreaths and have special speakers.”
This isn’t just a history lesson – it’s a chance to feel the weight of our nation’s journey and the sacrifices made along the way.

More Than Just a Military Event
While the focus is on the Army’s anniversary, this celebration is for everyone. The event will take place in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district, surrounded by iconic landmarks like the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center.
Tom emphasized the family-friendly nature of the event:
“It’s going to be fun for the whole family because we’re not in some stuffy area. Where this event is happening is right in Independence Mall… It’s going to be a beautiful location for people to come, naturally be tourists, see all the things that we’re doing.”
This is your chance to combine a family vacation with a truly meaningful experience – one that connects you to the very foundations of our country.
A Call to Service and Community
Perhaps the most powerful aspect of this event is its potential to inspire. As veterans, Tom and I both know that service doesn’t end when you take off the uniform. This celebration is a reminder of the ongoing commitment to our communities and each other.
Tom put it beautifully:
“We never stop serving our fellow brothers and sisters that sign the same blank check that we did in any way that we can possibly serve them, which leads us to serve our communities, whether you’re civilian or military.”
For those struggling with the transition to civilian life or dealing with the invisible wounds of service, this event can be a powerful reminder that you’re not alone. The Army 250th celebration is an opportunity to connect with others who understand your journey and to find resources and support.
Your Invitation to History
Whether you’re a veteran, a history buff, or simply an American proud of your country’s heritage, the Army 250th celebration in Philadelphia is an event you won’t want to miss. It’s a chance to:

– Connect with a community of service members, veterans, and supporters

The Decision Is Yours
As we wrapped up our conversation, Tom posed a challenge that I now extend to you:
“Are you going to be a part of history? Or are you going to sit back and miss out on it?”
The choice is yours. This isn’t just about celebrating the past – it’s about shaping our future. By coming together to honor our military legacy, we strengthen the bonds that make our nation great.
So, will you answer the call? Will you stand with us in Philadelphia to celebrate 250 years of the United States Army? I hope to see you there, as we write the next chapter of American history together.
