Cowboy Action Shooting: Stepping Back in Time with Ruby Ruthless

on 08/02/2025

Imagine stepping into a world where the Wild West comes alive, complete with cowboys and cowgirls dressed in traditional attire, wielding Western Heritage firearms. This isn’t a movie set—it’s the thrilling world of Cowboy Action Shooting, brought to life by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS). In this episode, we dive into this unique sport with Corina Novo, aka Ruby Ruthless, a passionate participant and SASS employee.

The Allure of Cowboy Action Shooting

Ruby’s journey into Cowboy Action Shooting began as a volunteer at End of Trail, SASS’s world championships. What started as a college kid’s side gig quickly turned into a full-time passion. The appeal? It’s more than just shooting—it’s a complete immersion into Western heritage.

“It was just stepping back in time,” Ruby recalls. “You’re amongst all of these competitors dressed in traditional western attire with Western Heritage Firearms.”

The experience is so authentic that it feels surreal. Imagine competing in a full Western town, with 17 shooting bays and cowboys and cowgirls wandering the streets. It’s this unique blend of history, sport, and community that keeps enthusiasts coming back for more.

Getting Involved in SASS

If you’re intrigued by the idea of Cowboy Action Shooting, here’s how you can get started:

1. Find a local club: SASS has over 500 affiliated clubs worldwide.

2. Visit a range: Attend a local event to observe and ask questions.

3. Try it out: Most clubs are happy to let newcomers borrow equipment and try a stage.

“Our first recommendation is if you’re interested in cowboy action shooting and you want to give it a try, find the club that’s closest to you and get out to the range,” Ruby advises.

SASS: A Global Phenomenon

You might be surprised to learn that Cowboy Action Shooting isn’t just an American pastime. SASS has a significant presence across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. This global appeal stems from a universal love for Western films and the romanticized era they represent.

“There’s such a large reverence and love for the Western film industry,” Ruby explains. “Those Western movies that we all grew up watching with Roy Rogers and the Lone Ranger.”

Major Events and Opportunities

For those looking to dive deeper into the world of Cowboy Action Shooting, SASS hosts two major championships:

1. End of Trail (World Championships): Held in Phoenix, Arizona, typically in late February.

2. Land Run (National Championships): Located in Arcadia, Oklahoma, just north of Oklahoma City.

These events are not just for competitors—spectators are always welcome to come and experience the excitement firsthand.
