In this raw and vulnerable episode of Faith Valor Growth, I open up about my 20-year struggle with Adderall addiction. This isn’t just my story, it’s a message of hope for anyone battling their own demons, feeling stuck, or questioning their purpose.
The Moment of Truth
It was 2 AM on June 25th when I finally admitted to myself: I had a problem. For two decades, I’d been using Adderall as a crutch, convincing myself it was necessary to keep up with the demands of running multiple businesses. But the cost was becoming unbearable.
My children were saying, “Dad’s mean all the time.” My wife was left guessing what was wrong. I looked in the mirror and saw a shell of the man I wanted to be. Something had to change.
The Illusion of Control
Here’s a hard truth I had to face: I didn’t trust that God would give me the strength to succeed without chemical help. I was trying to force outcomes, to carry the football across the goal line all by myself. But that’s not how faith works. That’s not how real growth happens.
As a fellow veteran, you might recognize this mindset. We’re trained to push through, to never show weakness. But sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is admit we need help.
The Crash and the Clarity
Stopping Adderall wasn’t easy. Those first few weeks were a rollercoaster of emotions and physical symptoms. But with each passing day, the fog began to lift. I started to see clearly for the first time in years.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9
This verse became my lifeline. I realized that by clinging to Adderall, I was rejecting the very strength God wanted to give me. My weakness, my struggle—that’s exactly where His power could shine through.
Redefining Strength
We often think of strength as never needing help, always having it together. But what if true strength looks different? What if it’s found in:
– Admitting when we’re struggling
– Asking for support from loved ones
– Surrendering our illusion of control to God
This journey has taught me that real strength comes through surrender. It’s not about having all the answers or being perfect. It’s about being willing to be broken and rebuilt.
A Call to Action for Our Community
If you’re struggling with addiction, feeling overwhelmed, or just sensing that something needs to change in your life, hear this: You are not alone. Your struggles don’t disqualify you from God’s love or your purpose. They might just be the very thing that leads you to your true calling.
Here’s what I want you to do:
1. Reach out: Whether it’s to me, a trusted friend, or a professional, take that first step. Admitting you need help is an act of courage, not weakness.
2. Surrender: Let go of the idea that you have to do it all yourself. Allow God’s strength to work in your weakness.
3. Take it one day at a time: Recovery and growth are processes. Focus on today, on making the next right choice.
4. Stay connected: Surround yourself with people who support your journey. Consider joining our Faith Valor Growth community for ongoing encouragement.
